But . . . there are the true results of my adventure into drying cranberries!! I will do it again. I will also take my frozen cranberries (which will become rather tough if dried) and make cranapple juice. I like the idea of the juice and then the leftover cranberries could be made into a chutney, etc. That way you can use the berries for two different recipes. No waste! That would be usin' your noggin'!!! I was totally glad to have come across this amazing result!! So have some fun!! Try it for yourself. If you come up with different results let me know - I'd love to hear about it. I have these pictures on my Pictures Page, only larger, if you would like a better look!
UPDATE: Well, time for the dried cranberries results! I put them in the dehydrator late yesterday morning and left them in there all day and all night. When I got up this morning at 6:00 a.m. I busted it getting downstairs to my dehydrator. The messed up bunch of cranberries were dry and a little crispy. The ones I didn't mess up - about half of them were ready to come off. That half wasn't too crispy but probably crispier than the ones you buy at the store - so I am carefully watching the rest of them. A couple hours later I pulled all but a handful of that one bag out of the dehydrator. When dehydrated - they look like you only put a handful on the tray so don't think one bag will do ya. The other thing is the berries are still quite tart. If you really like natural food and are used to not everything being so doggone sweet you will like the cranberries but if you like sweet this will probably not do for you. Hubby ate a couple and said they were okay but tart - so that's not bad, considering that when you eat cranberries you generally eat them with something else sweet. I'm okay with them; but they do NOT taste like the Craisins you buy at the store - I don't care what anybody else tries to tell you!!! But then again, I wasn't expecting Craisins. After taste testing them myself I would say that the messed up ones are actually a little sweeter, which only makes sense if you think about it. They were the ones that started to get mushy and were left in the apple juice longer. I am actually pretty happy with the results. It will be important to monitor the cranberries after about 12 hours and inconvenient as well, and there are other possibilities for sweetening them if you wish. Like I said before, you could use honey and I'm wondering if I couldn't figure out something using stevia. I actually don't know if I will go to the trouble though because they suit my purpose. I will now put the bags in the frig or freezer for storing. But . . . there are the true results of my adventure into drying cranberries!! I will do it again.
