While I was in the garden this morning I found my very first large tomato. The picture below is of a Mortgage Lifter. Granted it's not the finest looking one but IT'S MY FIRST OF THE SUMMER!!! Tonight supper is going to be a killer!!! (We're going to have Chicken, Green Beans with Garlic & Almonds and sliced Tomatoes. Yum!) On the right you'll see the red and yellow cherry tomatoes I was talking about on my earlier blogs. Most of these are the larger cherry type but a few of my smaller red ones are coming in also. I love tomatoes, always have!! I have a girlfriend that just can't stand them and I think she's crazy. When I see tomatoes coming on I immediately think of BLT's, tomato sauce and all the Italian dishes I can put together, not to dismiss tomato soup, stuffed tomatoes and just plain old sliced tomatoes. Gosh, I love it all!! Last year I planted 23 plants of assorted tomatoes and canned it all and all of it's been gone for several months. This year I planted 28 - but that's it - I'm not planting any more than that. I've squeezed tomato plants in everywhere I have a spare spot. There has to be a stopping point. I think I've reached mine. LOL
I've also noticed that 2 of my zucchini plants are dying off. It seems kind of soon but the weather here has turned awfully hot. When we get back from the reunion this week-end I'm going to plant a couple more hills of zucchini and yellow squash, lettuce and spinach . . . I think that's it.
HIGH ALERT!!!! We are on alert for racoons. Our corn is just absolutely looking magnificent!! It's tasseled and the ears have that young beautiful silk on it. The ears are growing now daily. It won't be long - but that being said - this is about the time the racoons decide to have a "field day". Let them eat somebody else's corn this year - I want mine!! I've got plans for grilling it and making some Corn and Tomato Salsa and we love Creamed Corn since I found out how to make it the right way and oh, Corn and Sausage Chowder in the Winter is another one of those wonderful soups that warms your insides.
Well, I guess I'd better stop blogging and get back to work. By the way, I have a few new pics on my Pictures Page if you're interested. Have a wonderful evening.
