I went out to work in my herb garden yesterday and I'm here to tell you the squirrels are eating me out of house and home. All the new plants I bought have been either dug up or cut down by those ugly boogers. I had beautiful summer savory, 2 huge pineapple sages, purple basil and of course, 4 different types of geraniums. All gone!! All my safflower and calendula - gone!! I go out there to weed and make my garden look nice and I just get sick to my stomach. A friend of mine told me that coffee grounds will keep the squirrels from digging up your plants. I will try that, definitely, but it's too late for all those other plants. I'm at the point I'm afraid to weed. It will bring attention to my plants!! This has not been a good year in the herb garden. No indeed!! Oh well, there's always next year!
My thermometer reads 93 and the chickens are panting and their wings are drooping and I've read that's how they look when they are in the process of overheating. They say anything over 90 degrees is hard on them. I'd say they'd better suck it up cause this is just the beginning. I always freeze milk jugs of water in my freezer so that if the electricity goes out there is ice in my freezer to keep things cold but I've taken about 5 half gallon jugs and put them in my chicken pen so they can gather around them and be a little cooler and when the wind blows perhaps the air will be a little cooler too. I've put a water bottle in the freezer and tomorrow I will put that inside their waterer to keep the water cool. If it gets too bad I'll put a fan out there and have it blow on the ice. That would be a way to cool them down a little. They just look so pitiful out there.
When I bought the food processor a recipe for pizza dough came with it and all of a sudden pizza did not seem to be such a big deal. The dough is easy enough to make and only has to rise for 45 minutes in a plastic baggie. Oven time for the pizza is like 10 to 15 minutes tops and with this heat I don't want the oven on heating up the house. Things are looking up in the food department cause I love pizza!!!
