Ah, once again - Mother Nature is not always the beautiful lady, dressed in flowing gown with a wreath of herbs and flowers in her hair. Sometimes she's very, very harsh.
The ground squirrels (yes, I mean Alvin the Chipmunk!) are driving me crazy!! I go out and plant the herb plants in the herb garden and the next day I go out and the chipmunks have dug 'em up. They don't eat them, mind you. They see disturbed dirt so they dig them up thinking that perhaps there's a bug or worm or whatever in there around the roots and I'm stuck with plants all dug up. The plants can stand a lot but 3 or 4 times of that and I can kiss them good-by. One year I planted like 15 plants and then had to go out of town for the week-end. I came home to find 15 plants all uprooted and by that time - dead. One year I planted 15 or 20 and replanted to the tune of a minimum of 4 times and lost about half. I'm heading out there in a few minutes to sprinkle some stuff hubby bought for me that's all natural and is supposed to repel them. I'll believe it when I see it!! I'm not exactly what you call a fan of those cute little boogers!!! As I've said before, we have 2 nesting pair of purple martins in our box along with a couple sparrows which we tried to get rid of but they just kept coming back. The martins and sparrows have developed somewhat of a stand-off and tolerate each other fairly well. Neither bothers the others' nests. Today, while sitting out on the deck I notice a black bird dragging an egg out of the sparrows nest. It was one of those nasty yellow-billed blackbirds. I don't know what they are called but they are vicious, sneaky and mean. The sparrow tried to protect her nest but he's much bigger. I got out there and had a crazy, arm flapping fit and he flew off but I'll guarantee he'll be back.

AuthorMy name is Nina. Southern Indiana has been my home since 1952. I've been a legal secretary most of my adult life and for my leisure time I enjoy everything connected to the world of herbs and cooking is almost like a "fever". I am also quite opinionated but try not to push my opinions on others. My family is grown and I'm left with a wonderful hubby sharing life with me. I'd guess you'd say my passion is living that life to the fullest. Archives
