I have been fixing some warm oats every 3 or 4 days for the chickens. One of them is definitely molting and you can tell she isn't feeling well. Bless her heart. I've been trying to keep everything status quo and stress-less, along with feeding her a little extra protein. I'm only getting 4 or 5 eggs daily which is not bad due to, most likely, the weather; plus, I'm sure since she is not laying due to molting. Four eggs are plenty for my purposes. I hope she gets to feeling better soon.
Take all orange, grapefruit and lemon peels and either dehydrate them or throw them in the freezer. Go to your spice cabinets and grab some cinnamon sticks or chips, some whole and broken star anise, whole coriander(which you can grow yourself, it's the seed from cilantro) and whole cloves. You can also throw in any leftover dried mints too. Now mix all your dried spices and herbs together in a container or a baggie. Toss in any citrus you have dehydrated too. Now you're ready.
To make the air-freshener, toss 1/2 cup of the mixture in some water, bring it to a simmer on the stove and enjoy a chemical-free air freshener. It's that simple. I like to keep a bag of all the ingredients mixed and on hand. I use all my old spices and dehydrated citrus peels for the blend. (Don't throw the old spices and herbs away. Use them for this!) Then when you simmer it in your pot you can add any fresh citrus peels you have leftover in the frig or stuck in the freezer. It's wonderful!!! I am a sucker for helping students out and always end up buying way too may oranges when they come around selling, and rather than let my oranges go bad, I will juice them and then dehydrate the peelings. Works for me!!
Also, as a side, don't forget to take some of those excess oranges, grapefruits and lemons and zest them. Dehydrate some zest and freeze some zest. Recipes are always asking for orange or lemon zest. Do this and you'll be prepared without having to run to the store for a couple fresh lemons or oranges. Don't forget how good the zest would be in herbal tea mixtures too!!
